Getting Your Own Phishing Protection
Today there are several different data providers who are now able to offer different kinds of phishing protection technology. These providers use technology to help protect you when using the Internet. They are able to compare the URLs of the sites that you are visiting with a list of those sites which are known to be scams. Once a site has been identified as being such a scam they will then warn the user that the one they are viewing is one of them if it is.
One way of helping to protect you from phishing attacks is through the use of phishing filters. Certainly as phishing becomes more prevalent then a lot of companies are now looking at ways of helping to protect those that use their services from becoming victims of this kind of fraudulent behavior. Certainly you will find that companies like Microsoft and Firefox both have phishing filters which are now built into their Internet browser systems. Plus there are new toolbars being made available such as Spoofstick and Earthlink’s Anti-Phishing which can help to protect the user when they are surfing the net.
All phishing filters now being used act as an early warning system to those who are browsing the Internet. These tools work by checking the URL that has appears in the website address bar against a list of sites that are considered to be bad. Not only do these filters then warn the user if the site is considered to be a phishing site but it will also block the user from gaining access to the site as well. However if a site that you are looking at does not actually appear on the blacklist of a particular filter then it will look at what the characteristics of the site are. If they happen to be ones which are similar and common to other phishing sites that are recognized as being such then again it will provide you with a warning, but instead it will not immediately block you from gaining access to it.
The reason as to why this form of phishing protection has become extremely popular in recent months is because of the involvement and co-operation that has been taking place between the various industry groups. More that 6,000 sites have now been reported and are listed on various different phishing filter databases and although the information is gained often directly by the company that has developed the filter they also receive information regarding such sites through other parties as well.
